ASSE 6020 - Medical Gas Systems Inspector
ASSE 6020 – Medical Gas Systems Inspector
This standard applies to any individual who inspects the installation of medical gas and vacuum distribution systems.
Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include those in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Medical gas systems encompass those distributing USP gases, medical vacuum, WAGD and support gas piping systems.
- Candidates shall meet at least one of the following:
- Be a person regularly involved in the design, inspection or verification of medical systems.
- Be an ASSE 6010 Installer.
- Be employed by a governmental unit as a plumbing and/or mechanic inspector, or as an administrator of such inspectors.
- A minimum of two (2) years of documented practical experience.
- Completion of a minimum 24-hour training course covering ASSE Standard 6020 and applicable sections of NFPA 99 and NFPA 55. Course instruction shall be conducted by a Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6050.
- Certification shall include a written examination covering ASSE Standard 6020 and applicable sections of NFPA 99. The exam shall be a minimum of 100 questions with a minimum passing score of 70%.
ASSE 6030 - Medical Gas Systems Verifier
ASSE 6030 – Medical Gas Systems Verifier
This standard applies to any individual who tests and verifies the operation of medical gas and vacuum systems except their bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems. Bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems shall be verified by a person certified to ASSE 6035. Where a medical gas system is supplied by a bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply system, the ASSE 6030 Medical Gas Systems Verifier shall test and verify the work on the patient side of the bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply system source valve only.Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include those in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Medical gas systems encompass those distributing USP gases, medical vacuum, WAGD and support gas piping systems.
- A minimum of two (2) years of documented practical experience in the verification of medical gas systems.
- Completion of a minimum 32-hour training course covering ASSE Standard 6030 and applicable sections of NFPA 99 and NFPA 55 and CGA M-1. Course instruction shall be conducted by a Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6050.
- Certification shall include a written AND a practical examination covering ASSE 6030 and applicable section of NFPA 99, NFPA 55 and CGA M-1.
- The written exam shall be a minimum of 100 questions with a minimum passing score of 85%.
- The practical exam shall include, but not be limited to, demonstration of the proper use of test equipment and the verification procedures & documentation of test results.
ASSE 6035 - Medical Gas Systems Bulk Verifier
ASSE 6035 – Bulk Medical Gas/Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply Systems Verifiers
This standard applies to any individual who tests and verifies bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems or components supplying health care facilities.Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include those in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Medical gas systems encompass those distributing USP gases, medical vacuum, WAGD and support gas piping systems.
- A minimum of two (2) years of documented practical experience in the verification and/or inspection of bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems.
- Certification shall include either:
- Completion of a minimum 32-hour training course covering bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems, the FDA CGMPs, CGA M-1 and application sections of ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000, NFPA 99 and NFPA 55.
- Possession of a current ASSE 6030 Medical Gas Verifier’s credential and the completion of an additional minimum 16-hour training course covering bulk medical gas/cryogenic fluid central supply systems, the FDA CGMPs, CGA M-1 and application sections of ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000, NFPA 99 and NFPA 55.
- Bulk Medical Gas/Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6055.
- Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6050 and ASSE 6035.
- Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6050 who has successfully completed the 16-hour course outlined in Annex E.2.
- The written exam shall be a minimum of 100 questions with a minimum passing score of 85%.
- The practical exam shall include, but not be limited to, demonstration of the proper use of test equipment, verification procedures and documentation of test results.
ASSE 6040 - Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel
ASSE 6040 – Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel
This standard applies to any individual who maintains medical gas and vacuum systems. Healthcare facility personnel installing medical gas or vacuum systems shall be certified to ASSE Standard 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer.Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include those in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Medical gas systems encompass those distributing USP gases, medical vacuum, WAGD and support gas piping systems.
- Currently employed or contracted by a health care facility, or be actively engaged in working with medical gas systems.
- A minimum of one (1) years experience in the maintenance of the medical gas and vacuum systems.
- Completion of a minimum 24-hour training course covering ASSE Standard 6040 and applicable sections of NFPA 99 pertaining to medical gas and vacuum. Course instruction shall be conducted by a Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6050.
- Certification shall include a written examination covering ASSE 6040 and maintenance related sections of NFPA 99 pertaining to medical gas and vacuum. The written exam shall be a minimum 100 questions with a minimum passing score of 70%.
ASSE 6050 - Medical Gas Systems Instructor
ASSE 6050 – Medical Gas Systems Instructor
This standard applies to any individual who trains or teaches installers, inspectors, verifiers, healthcare facility maintenance personnel and in some cases designers, regarding medical gas systems in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code.Medical gas systems encompass those distributing USP gases, medical vacuum, WAGD and support gas piping systems.
- A minimum of ten (10) years of documented experience in the installation of plumbing or mechanical piping systems.
- A minimum of two (2) years of documented experience in the installation of medical gas and vacuum systems.
- A minimum of two (2) years of documented practical teaching experience.
- Possess a current Medical Gas Systems Installer certification in compliance with ASSE Standard 6010.
- Completion of a minimum 40-hour training course covering ASSE Standards 6010, 6020, 6030, 6040, 6050 and applicable sections of NFPA 99, NFPA 55 and CGA M-1. Course instruction shall be conducted by a Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6050.
- Certification shall include a written examination covering ASSE Standards 6010, 6020, 6030, 6040, 6050 and application sections of NFPA 99, NFPA 55, and CGA M-1. The written exam shall be a minimum of 100 questions with a minimum passing score of 85%.
ASSE 6060 - Medical Gas Systems Designer
ASSE 6060 – Medical Gas Systems Designer
This standard applies to any individual who designs medical gas systems, new or existing, including the layout, sizing and selection of equipment and piping, location of medical gas outlet/vacuum inlets and assessment of existing systems for resizing or replacement.Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include those in health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code. Medical gas systems encompass those distributing USP gases, medical vacuum, WAGD and support gas piping systems.
- A minimum two (2) years documented experience in the mechanical and plumbing systems industry and require practical knowledge of the design of medical gas and vacuum systems.
- Completion of a minimum 32-hour training course covering ASSE 6060, the essential requirements of NFPA 99, NFPA 55, FGI Guidelines and elements of design. Course instruction shall be conducted by a Medical Gas Systems Instructor certified to ASSE 6050 and/or by any person with a minimum of ten (10) years documented experience in the mechanical and plumbing industry and a minimum of five (5) years documented design experience in medical gas and vacuum systems.
- Certification shall include successful completion of a written exam demonstrating understanding of ASSE 6060 and elements from the applicable sections of NFPA 99, NFPA 55 and FGI Guidelines. The written exam shall be a minimum of 100 questions with a minimum passing score of 70%. A minimum of 50% of the questions shall include practical design exercises requiring the use of the design principles and application of the rules in NFPA 99, NFPA 55 and FGI Guidelines.
The written exam shall demonstrate core competencies in:- Designing category space requirements
- Placement of medical gas outlets/vacuum inlets, and valves and alarms all gas and vacuum systems as required by the FGI Guidelines and NFPA 99.
- Use of design principles and application of the rules for piping layout complete with sizing for medical gas systems.
- Calculation for sizing of piping, intakes, exhausts and source equipment.
